UV rays are considered to be a carcinogen, and is the main cause of melanoma and other types of skin cancer. UVA rays go deeper into the skin and are responsible for aging, but UVB rays make the skin look red and burned. These rays also damage connective tissues in the body. UVA rays are the most common type of ultraviolet radiation at the earth’s surface.
Besides wearing protective clothing or sun block, the best thing to do is to be in the shade during the heat of the day, especially between the hours of 10am and 3 pm. If you are outside during this time period, consider alternating time spent in the shade and in the sunlight, to avoid too much exposure. Even small changes such as wearing makeup with an SPF of 15 will help protect the skin of your face. Additionally, weather prediction services sometimes offer a UV Index, which can predict, on a scale from 1 to 15, the risk of UV exposure for a given day. Higher numbers indicate greater risk. To protect yourself, avoid excessive time outdoors on days with a high UV index.
