Elizabeth-Ann-slider-3In the hustle of today’s world most of us have phones that are capable of taking images that our previous generations could have only dreamt of but when it comes time for a quality professional portrait who do you call? The industry is saturated with many options leaving you feeling very overwhelmed but in reality it only takes a few quick questions to narrow down exactly what you’re looking for.

First off, what is the main purpose of these photos? Are you getting married and looking for a photographer to be there for the duration of your wedding day? A senior in high school who is looking to capture exactly who they are at this point in their life? An annual family photo or the first time everyone has been together in five years? All of these options will call for a different type of photograph and different photographers will provide different options. When reaching out to photographers don’t be afraid to ask the photographer what they specialize in. Every photographer has his or her own style, which brings us to the next question.

Start considering what type of images you want. Do you want something that will make Grandma proud with all five member of your family looking at the camera full of smiles? Will a lifestyle session meet your needs to document your little children playing and laughing? If you have your photos done annually then you can consider going for a concept style featuring holiday décor or even in the summer with the children in the swim wear. A great way to scan multiple ideas is on Pinterest. If you’re unfamiliar with Pinterest you can check it out for yourself here A quick search on Pinterest will help you see what you are the most drawn to then ask your photographer if they fit that style.

It all really comes down to finding a photographer who fits the idea you have in mind. There are so many talented photographers locally who offer a variety of styles. Have you enjoyed someone else’s photos? Ask them who their photographer was. We as photographers love referrals from previous clients. You can also spend time looking over their website, blog, or even social media pages to start seeing what kind of style of photography they offer.

The simplest step of them all is booking for photographer and letting them know what you plan on using the images for. Looking to replace the portraits that currently hang in your home, tell them! It helps the photographer to know what the end results will be when they are creating your images! Hiring a photographer that you feel comfortable around and trust to make you great portraits will make all the difference. You just need to relax and enjoy the experience!
