The Gift of Giving and Serving Others | 2017 C.A.L.L. Cafe

On Tuesday, August 29th, our office had the privilege to provide and serve a meal at the C.A.L.L.  Cafe. For those who are not familiar with this program, The C.A.L.L. Cafe is a free meal provided to the less fortunate. Organizations, churches and businesses volunteer and take care of all expense and preparation of a meal for these individuals.

Before the meal was served up, Dan shared a personal story and prayer with everyone. Watch for yourself!

We purchased fried chicken from McSobers, made mashed potatoes, gravy, corn and fruit cocktail. Prior to the meal we served chips and salsa as a snack. People from the office volunteered to bring in the desserts. Chocolate must have been on the brain here at work! An abundance of brownies, no bake cookies, chocolate cake, and chocolate chip zucchini cake was prepared. We served 66 clients in addition to ourselves.

This is always such a special night for our team. A chance for us to do something different together, all while serving and helping others on a very personal level. This was also a very humbling experience for all of us, hearing stories first hand on how some people are living right here in our community. Seeing their smiles and hearing their appreciation for the evening was just the icing on the cake for us! We look forward to being able to do this again in the future!

Abby Timmerman, one of our amazing insurance agents, shares with us just a few of her favorite memories with her dad. Enjoy!

My dad is one of my best friends. I call him Dad, but most people know him by Dino!! ♥️
This guy has been there for me for as long as I can remember. There has not been too many secrets between us. I’ve always been able to tell him anything and everything. He tends to say things like they are, and has the biggest heart you’ll ever find. He is hard-working, genuine, and kind. The love he has for children and his grand babies is something we all treasure. There’s nothing like an unexpected text or a phone call just to see how things are going.
I have so many wonderful memories with my Dad, but a few are:
– Him letting us eat Nutty Bars, Fritos, and drink Dr. Pepper for breakfast before dropping us off at the sitters in the morning. 
– Singing our hearts out to Alabama over and over in his old red truck
– Our countless late-night turkey barn stories (often stories Mom didn’t want to hear)…
Happy Father’s Day to all Dad’s out there, but especially to my Dad. We love you to the moon and back!

By doing so, she won a  KitchenAid baking sheet, KitchenAid cake pan and a KitchenAid cook book for a lucky family member of hers! She told us she was going to give these baking items to her sister Leah Bruns.

My Wife Is A Star!

My Wife Is A Star!

I just wanted to share with everyone what a wonderful experience this entire event has been for me, my wife Susie, and Preferred Insurance Center.  The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer Auglaize and Van Wert Counties puts on this event and they do a great job. It is called Dancing With The Big Stars and if you haven’t seen it, you should. It’s a blast.

Donating $10 to local charity for every policy we quote!

I also need to thank all the people who donated to BBBS on our behalf. We raised over $6,900 which is amazing and none of it could have been done without the fantastic people and businesses in our area. A special thank you needs to go out to a few people.First, I want to thank my nephew Craig Muhlenkamp who is the professional dancer and his wife Michelle. He is the one who convinced my wife Susie to dance with him and he is the one who did the choreography and taught Susie to dance. He did a fantastic job and he and Michelle are the most wonderful people. We love them dearly.

  • Al Hall, a friend of my partner Roger Rindler, graciously gave up his OSU vs Michigan football tickets so we could raffle them off!

I am so happy to see you shine in a spotlight of you own tonight.  So true!

  • We Are Tiggers Not Eeyores!   Tiggers are excited and happy.  They have bad days and bad times but they make the best of it. Tiggers bring life and spark and smiles and energy into the room. Tiggers are fun to be around.  We attract clients, coworkers, networkers and friends because we have a great attitude. Eeyores see the problems not the solutions. They suck the life and energy out of a room. They complain without offering a suggestion for an improvement. The world is always picking on them. They are annoyed by Tiggers.
  • We Are Grateful!  We have been blessed by God and are thankful for it.  To complain about our lives, our jobs, or our situations is a slap in the face of God.  We live in a wonderful part of a wonderful country.  We are free and we are thankful for it. We work with incredible people for a great purpose.
  • We Are Charitable!  We have been given a lot, we will give a lot.  This is not some small thing we do to look good.  This is a major reason we show up to work.

  • Change is life.  If we aren’t growing, we’re withering.  If it’s broke, fix it.  If it’s not broke, improve it.
  • Sales are a wonderful thing.  Nothing happens till something gets sold.  Without a sale, we don’t buy “stuff” and the economy fails. When we make a sale another client becomes properly protected by the right agency. Every call is either a sales call, or the setup for a sales call.

The Preferred Insurance Flamingos had quite the adventure this summer already! They were ecstatic to help three great local organizations/groups raise a total of $3,000!! The flamingos attended the St. Henry, Coldwater and Fort Recovery garage sale. For every flock of flamingos that were placed at a garage sale, Preferred Insurance Center along with a company sponsor would donate $20 total to the designated organization/group. The St. Henry Track Team, the Coldwater Academic Promoters and the Fort Recovery Traveling Tribe were all able to receive $1,000 each!

The flamingos sure had a fiesta at the Fort Recovery garage sales! They appreciated the Fort Recovery Traveling Tribe’s hospitality and fun spirit. The Fort Recovery Traveling Tribe is planning a trip to Spain and Italy next summer. Preferred Insurance Center and Auto-Owners Insurance were able to donate a total of $1,000 to the Traveling Tribe and their trip.
FR FlamingoEarlier today Amanda Kremer, Abby Timmerman and a few pink ladies delivered their final garage sale fundraiser check to a few members of the Fort Recovery Traveling Tribe. Everyone here at the Preferred Insurance office would like to wish the Traveling Tribe safe travels on their trip next summer! Don’t have too much fun 😉

Every year, at least for the last 10 years, around this time I do a little life planning.  I’ve found it to be EXTREMELY helpful, so I thought I would share it.  It’s not terribly ingenious, but it takes some time.  If you are honest with yourself, it will probably be very helpful.

Most successful businesses develop business plans.  I’m sure you’ve heard the quote, “Most people don’t plan to fail, they just fail to plan”.  So some years ago I was working on a business plan when I suddenly realized I had never applied those planning principles to my personal life.  I did it, and have never quit.

I’ll try to to give you a brief overview, but you need to download the guide above. It has much more detail and suggestions.

Step 1: Discover what you were created for.

A fulfilling life beats the crap out of happy life, every time! What gets you up in the morning?  If you were guaranteed success in a perfect world, what would you do all day long? Be passionate about something.  Life is too short to live in desperate mediocrity.  You don’t have to set the world on fire, but life is better when YOU are on fire.

Step 2: S.W.O.T.

Define your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats…and then there is the Bonus Question!

Step 3:  Define your roles – where do you really make a difference?

We can only do so much so we need to know what we need to do and what we are are good at, and what we like to do. It’s one of those things that once you think about it and do it, it will add a lot of clarity to your life.

Step 4: Pick 2 or 3 goals, make a plan, and get going.

Don’t overdue it, but challenge yourself.  Decide on a few steps that will get you started on each goal.  Now put the paper somewhere you’ll handle it regularly.  Mine is my screen saver and at the top of my prayer journal.  Plan on looking at them every 3 months and see where you are on your goals, change your steps, or pat yourself on the back.

It’s that simple.  Now get excited, get growing, and get going.

What’s The Story With Those Pink Flamingos?

MPL slider image 4“What the heck is the deal with all those flamingos?”  We get the question all the time, and its a great question with a fun answer.

The story starts in 2012 when Preferred Insurance was celebrating our 100th anniversary. As part of that celebration, we decided to make 2012 the “Year of Giving Back”.  We started Quotes4Causes (giving $10 to charity for every quote we give) and vowed to get more involved in our great community and raising money for local charities.

One of our favorite charities was and still is Serving Friends And Families Ministries, and we were looking for a way to raise a little money for them.  Hillary Staugler was doing an internship with us at the time and I asked her to look for some ideas.  She surfed the web for a little while till she found something crazy enough to get my attention.

Flamingo Flocking Is Born

Or this is what Hillary came up with!

We created 10 flocks of flamingos and different volunteers at different charities were in charge of each flock.  They started by putting them in a few yards, along with a sign saying “You’ve Been Flocked!  Call Preferred Insurance”.  When the people would call in we would tell them that for a small donation of $20 to the charity, we would send out our “technicians” to remove the flamingos.  However, we don’t have any cages for the flamingos, so they needed to tell us whose yard the technicians should move the flamingos to…and the whole cycle would start over again.

That summer, with the help our great community, our lovely pink ladies raised over $3,000.  They also became our mascot and gave our agency a new favorite color – pink of course.  The flamingos still go “flocking” for multiple organizations every summer, and they pretty successfully annoy enough people to not be forgotten.

The neatest thing about this story however, is how the experience changed us, Preferred Insurance Center.  When 2012 –  “The Year Of Giving Back”  came to an end we knew it had been a great year.  All our fundraising and getting involved had given us a new purpose and energy.  We were better people, in a better agency, with a better attitude.  There was no going back.

From 2012 to the present (2015) our partners, clients, neighbors and flamingos have helped us raise or give over $75,000 to local charities.  Our new attitude has put smiles on a lot of faces, and we have grown from 6 team members to 13.  It’s been a crazy ride on an awesome pink rollercoaster here in God’s theme park we call Life.  If it sounds like fun, give us a call, we’d love to have you come along for the ride.  Just hop on, put your hands in the air, and scream like a girl till you’re stomach hurts from laughing.
